Since ratings are a common thing in book reviews, but they are by no means standardized, I thought I'd include my system for ratings. Important Note: while I don't typically use stars as my rating item during my reviews (I try to pick an item from the novel instead), for the sake of this page, I will be using stars. One Star: These are for books I should have DNF'ed but didn't because i thought there was one or two qualities that would redeem the book but didn't. I won't write many reviews for a one star unless I feel like I need to for a feminist analysis. Two Stars: This book was generally not good. There is one or two redeeming qualities to it, but it really falls into an average category. Nothing makes it stand out, beyond average and keeps it from getting that 3rd star. Books rated between 2-3 stars will typically get a 2 star rating on sites like Goodreads since they aren't a book I would recommend unless it seems the book would fit a person's specific parameters. Three Stars: This was a good book! I liked a lot about it, it was very solid as a book. I enjoyed reading it, and while it may not have kept me up reading all night to see what happens next, I was excited to sit down and pick it back up. There are one or two issues that bothered me enough to keep it from getting a 4th star. Books between a 3-4 star rating will typically get a 4 star rating on sites like Goodreads since they only had few things I disliked, and it's a book I will recommend to others, especially those who enjoy the genre. Four Stars: I loved this book! It was amazing, with basically flawless execution. While it might have a couple things I didn't love, they didn't distract from the book or the experience of reading it. This is a book I read in just a handful of sittings, and will be recommending to friends from a long time, whether they like the genre or not. Books between a 4-5 star rating will typically get a 4 star rating on sites like Goodreads since I view 5 star books as being a different tier that needs to be fully reached for the rating. Five Stars: This book exceeded every expectation. I cannot sing it enough praises. I loved it beginning to end, with no nit-picky complaints anywhere in-between. I secluded myself in a cozy corner and didn't leave until this book was finished. Everyone is getting this book added to their TBR list even if I'm penciling it in myself while they have stepped away momentarily. What's important about a 5 star rating to me is that I know in my heart this book will stand the test of time for me and I will think about it and it's messages for a long time to come. Five stars are hard to get purposefully to uphold their value. This rating system will be (should be) linked with every review to come back to. However, if you go through all of my book ratings on Goodreads I can't promise my older reviews abide by these terms. I was a young, impulsive reviewer with no real idea of what it meant to review a book.
How do you rate your books? What qualifies for 5 stars? Do you even bother rating books that get 1?

Hello, love! Please, don't mind the cat hair. I'm a lover of all genres (except romance, ironic, I know), and potentially --accidentally-- obsessed with feminist literary theory. Feel free to scroll around, hopefully see a few cats, and find a good new book or two!
